We (Paul and wife) had a barbecue with some friends yesterday, and one them—airlie pilot Lou—made these sinfully awesome hot dogs. I posted a pic on our Twitter account, and a number of folks have asked for the recipe. It’s not complicated, but here it is anyway. Lou says he got it from Bobby Flay:
- Split open hot dogs down middle
- Stuff with chopped jalapeño peppers and shredded cheese (whatever type you prefer; Lou used cheddar)
- Wrap hot dogs tightly with bacon
- Grill on medium-high heat on upper rack (if upper rack not present, grill on indirect heat)
- Serve, eat, attempt to avoid coronary.
They’re great with or without buns, but if you do use a bun, you may only use Martin’s Potato Rolls. (That is a rule strictly enforced by me, but not really part of the recipe) Click on the picture at right for a larger version, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This looks like perfect camping food… 🙂
Too many degrees of treyf, I’m afraid. I’m trying to imagine a kosher alternative. OK, kosher hot dogs, peppers, wrapped with… I’ve never tried grilling lox. Frankly the thought terrifies me. Then there’s the cheese, though. None of the truly non-dairy cheese substitutes has the characteristic Velveeta-meltiness. Maybe if we could find fish hot dogs…
Roman: thoughts?
mtgordon – how bout turkey bacon?
That still doesn’t work with the cheese, though. Also, kosher turkey bacon is apocryphal. And lox just seems so ridiculous! 🙂
Oh. Ma. Gah. I know what Bill and I are having for dinner….wonder if the kids’ll like it.
You made Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno & Cheese Hot Dogs on my birthday and didn’t invite me? Hurrumph. Now I’m going to have to make them myself.
Well, regarding cheese, you can use Tofutti stuff, so that solves that problem. I use that sort of stuff all the time.
Now I don’t personally like the taste of any kind of bacon, the real kind or the fake kind, plus it’s hella-unhealthy, so that’s a double pass for me.
So that leaves just hot dogs and jalapeño – both of which I like (though I’ve been eating more chicken dogs as of late). I’m not sure about them together though.
Lately I’ve been skipping the jalapeño when it comes to Subway, though – spicy stuff is getting on my nerves lately.
Tofutti is here, if my link didn’t work: http://www.tofutti.com/
While I didn’t make the aforepictured recipe, I DID make tofu wrapped bacon this weekend and holy crap was it awesome! A little soy sauce and brown sugar…even better the next day after the bacon flavor soaked through to the tofu. Yeah, this really doesn’t really add to the discussion, just though I’d share some bacony happiness.
Do you cook the bacon before you wrap? Or does the bacon cook with the hot dog?
Been making these for years without the peppers. I will now by adding them as I love spicy food. Just never thought to add peppers to these.
