Show #002: Not Quite According to Plan

Hey, look: it’s the second episode of our now-weekly (theoretically) podcast, Paul and Storm Talk About Some Stuff for Five to Ten Minutes (On Average)!

In this episode, not much is working entirely correctly; and Storm is nearly undone by technology and popcorn. Also covered: where we’re headed (both musically and podcastically), butter, jigsaw puzzles, lumpy bands, radish-based disappointment, our struggle to find the funny, and Paul’s fat head. All this and more in a podcast you can fit in during your lunch break down at Quiznos.

Intro music: “The By Cracky Beat” – Lowney’s Chocolates
Outro music: “Happy Days Polka” – Olaf Sveen; “The Popcorn Man” – The Tunetwisters

UPDATE: Click here to view the harvested heads mentioned in this week’s episode.

Ooh I get to be the first to comment (of course, it’s like 6:30 AM there).

“I was harvesting a bunch of our heads…”

I was listening to this at a cafe with a friend where we’re both (supposedly) working on our MA theses…and when it got to this point, I was laughing out loud, loudly enough that she had to turn away from her online dating life to find out just what was so funny.

[One podcast behind comment.] I was amazed to find that wherespoochie.com is an available domain. I was going to buy it, but I can’t decide what I would do with it.

Well, crud! Right before I sat down to listen to you guys, I put a small pot of water on to boil (making ramen noodles). I was so captivated by you two that I completely forgot about my water. When I finally got back to it, there was nothing left. ๐Ÿ™ So let that be a warning to people. Paul and Storm are too good at distracting you from possibly life threatening situations!

    Keep the podcasts coming!

Your comically musical (and musically comical) contributions to this year’s Ig Nobel Ceremony will most definitely be appreciated in an appropriately appreciative fashion, as we bring a small nerdy corner of the global world together as one to celebrate the joyous elation of Redundancy.

    Some content ideas:

    – tell the story behind of one of your songs
    – wacky/wild concert stories (now these you have to have a lot of, surely!)
    – make up some completely silly story (kind of like brainstorming song ideas?)
    – pick a news story, in the spirit of your work with Bob & Tom

these could be regular features, or ad hoc things…

bands for the lumpy. don’t forget The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Blues Traveler.
Good work on the podcast guys! Did my blogpost ever show up on your google watch?

    *Standard ‘you rock’ comment*

Also ‘Creepy Obsession Fear’ is the name of my screamo/hardcore/punk/metal/emo/etc band.

Have you thought about using some computer program like “Skype” or “Ekiga” which lets you make phone calls over the Intertubes? There’s a neat list to compare at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_VoIP_software

Also this show is better than the last one, so keep it up, they are getting better. A lot better.

How is it that the music on these musical comedian’s podcast isn’t their own music? They’re not in the mood to expose their best songs to new ears? Maybe they’re worried about having to pay themselves royalties? Don’t worry guys, it’s Creative Commons. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@Spiff: The funny thing is, they already WROTE a theme song for themselves, for Song Fu…

  10. Posted August 12, 2008 at 7:43 pm | Permalink

@Roman V: Spiff brought that very point up in the comments of Show #001 (just in case you didn’t already know), and now he’s turning up the heat. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    @P&S:
I also made my own butter this weekend. It’s creamier than store-bought butter, plus you can add your own flavors (like roasted garlic for example–my favorite flavored butter). Good stuff!

Are your igNobel performances going to find their way to the intertubes? That would be awesome!

so I’m think throwing a song jingle here and there would spice things up. or showing how one makes such jingle (kinda like showing someone how butter is made)

FROM THE ANNOYINGLY PICKY INTERNETS DEPT.:

So far, your “five to ten minutes” is actually averaging 17.135 minutes. In order to get your average down to your announced time range, your next two podcasts will need to be just under 3 minutes each. But even though that gets the average right, you’ll still have a situation where all of your podcasts will be outside the target time.

Well, I guess if the next three podcasts are each 5.243 minutes, then you’ll have 60% of your podcasts in the correct time range, plus an overall average of 9.998 minutes.

(Wow. Even I find that comment really annoying.)

I can’t believe neither of you thought of Spinal Tap in the “lumpy band” department. Possible also Division Bell-era Pink Floyd — Gilmour has REALLY let himself go.

Loving the show. I think the length is fine. Just ignore the frustrated actuary’s comments in #12.

Wow, popcorn really ought to come with a health warning!
Keep it up guys, you actually popped my podcast-cherry, believe it or not! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love the popcorn man song at the end, I assume thats a jingle from somewhere that I ought to know? Yet another reference I miss out on by not being American!

Would be interesting to see stats of how many ppl really are listening to these, I’m sure its more than 60!

Also, why can I not get the Pillsbury Cookie Dough song out of my head! It’s been playing all night long and tormenting me!

Oh, I also think the length is fine. But I’m not about to pass up on the chance to play internet gotcha.

For Lumpy Band: Spinal Tap is classic, but I think Bowling For Soup would give them a run for their money.

I’ve been on another Blues Brothers kick recently, so Joliet Jake/John Belushi popped right in my head for the lumpy category.

    Possible topics for songs…

-(For Song Fu) Written from the perspective of the man in the moon, possibly how he thinks we’re all stupid and our faces are too tiny.

    -The recent Bigfoot hoax
    http://www.searchingforbigfoot.com/

-Athletes who are bitter at Michael Phelps.

That’s all I can come up with off the top of my head, but keep the podcasts coming, they’re awesome. I’d download them to my player if they weren’t so conveniently bite-sized for browser listenin’.
