Thing a Week 53: Live (Masters of Song Fu Round 2)

Okay, maybe the above is a little presumptuous; but we’re hoping it’s close enough to a Coulton song to at least fit in the ล“uvre. Perhaps we get ahead of ourselves, however; let’s backtrack…

Our newest song was written for the Masters of Song Fu songwriting contest at Quickstop Entertainment. Our task this round was to write a song in the style of Jonathan Coulton. (In turn, he had to write a song in the style of us; more about that in a second…)

Make no mistake, this one was hard. A lot like childbirth, actually: there was a lot of moaning, yelling, pushing, fainting husbands, random fluids, and an epidural involved…but in the end, what came out was, we like to think, worth it all. So without further ado:

Live

Now, the voting begins; please vote for us, if you believe that our Fu is the stronger. But stronger than what, you ask? Coulton’s entry (a la us), “Big Dick Farts a Polka“. Wow. Battle Royale time, folks!

Voting will be open until 11:59 EST on July 9th. But whether or not we win, we’re very happy with our new offspring. Len has already done a VTAW version of “Live“; but we will truly know that we’ve hit the mark if Spiff ever makes a WoW video for it.

That’s a pretty frikin’ great Coulton, er… P&S song. Fits perfectly. I think I could see it turning into a video someday… ๐Ÿ™‚

Wow – those are both great songs. But Coulton’s trash talk may come back to haunt him…

What HAS to happen is that you perform each other’s songs in concert. I INSIST!

Great job but I don’t know what to do. If I vote for the Coulton song I’m voting for Paul and Storm or if I vote for Paul and Storm, I’m voting Coulton.

Nice guys! Had to look up Mr. Coulton, and appreciate his fondness for monkeys. But you guys get my votes!

I’d really love to be a dragonfly on the wall during one of your brainstorming sessions.

    Love it!

Well done, sirs. Well done! I’m in a quandary, because, as I suspected, both entries are great. Storm: beautiful guitar work!

Aw, geez, this is like asking me to pick which of my kids I love best! (Which is tough, since I don’t have any.)

Though I agree with Gina, you guys have to perform each others songs in concert. More whoopie cushion! More whoopie cushion!

Is there any chance of you convincing Mr. Coulton to record his own version of Live? It works so beautifully, you’ve summed up his style so succintly, but I’d love to hear those JoCo vocals (not that you guys didn’t do a great job).

Wow. You guys NAILED each others’ styles. I heard at least 5 different P&S song influences in Big Dick Farts a Polka, but I was absolutely amazed at how much Live is a JoCo song. From the eerily JoCo sounding Vocals to the spot-on guitar work.

This was the best song challenge ever. You guys need to keep doing these. Like, once every couple of months, a JoCo vs. P&S Smackdown. Now I just have to figure out who to vote for…

Definitely should not have listened to these during lunch; I forgot about the challenge of laughing with your mouth full. You guys have been spending WAYYY to much time together, but in this particular instance, it’s a very good thing.

    Flatulent arrr!

Your song-fu is exceptionally strong. Deciding between this and Coulton’s will be a challenge.

This is too tough. I say we call it a draw and have you both submit new entries. (That’s not greedy, is it?)

Loved ’em both, but had to give the edge to JoCo. I would LOVE to hear you do his song though!!

    Good job!!

I have to give you guys the nod at getting Coulton’s style better, though I still say you guys should have just submitted “Last week I left a note on Laura’s desk… I love her…”

As for Coulton’s song, I wasn’t aware that “Paul” and “‘Storm'” are actually stage names for Ren and Stimpy. I wasn’t too fond of it. The show, that is. The song too. Kind of.

What would have put your song over the top even more, I think, is moar impression of the voice, in the same way you did “If TMBG were the ice cream man”, which by the way was dead on.

Wow! I think Joco’s getting a run for his money here. ‘Live’ is superb. Not only does it sound like Joco, but it sounds like the greatest Joco songs.

If I could figure out how to vote for you I would.

Had to give it to you two for this — you completely nailed the style impression, plus the song is REALLY GOOD. Fantastic job, guys. Your Fu is mighty.

I saw you guys in NYC with Joco. That show rocked.

Both songs are excellent caricatures and well produced. JoCo proved he can do juvenile jokes in song form as well as you can. You took the classic JoCo villain and convinced me to that he’s right and the world is wrong. That’s some seriously clever meta-fu in my opinion!

Gentlemen, you have my vote. May JoCo forgive me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. Posted July 3, 2008 at 7:48 pm | Permalink

Wow, I’ve listened to “Live” about 15 times now, and it is SO eerily Coulton, I can’t take it. Your voice even SOUNDS like him.

    Freaky.

JoCo got my vote, but you got my money. ๐Ÿ™‚ I just bought “Live” and some other songs. (Already own all your CDs.) “Live” is worth more than a dollar. Where’s your donation link, pleez? I want to give you moar monies.

Well, it took a while but I finally decided and my vote went to you. Why? Well yesterday I was wandering aimless through a bookstore and found myself unconsciously humming. I automatically assumed I was just mangling Coulton’s “I Crush Everything” but then realized it was actually “Live”.

So, if you end up performing each others songs at a concert, do you owe each other royalties or just beer? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Paul’s Coulton impression is nearly flawless. Storm’s Coulton Guitar impression is absolutely flawless. You have my vote.

I had almost forgotten about the Song Fu competition. Just listened to both songs. I voted for you guys . . . “Live” sounds like a song JoCo would bust out five or six songs into his set. It just fits. Great job. And I must also side with my fellow fans and request you play these songs at live shows from now on. They’re too good not to share.

Voting is now closed and, sadly, it looks like P&S have once again taken a back seat to their friendly neighborhood internet superstar. I say pay him back with an embarrassing youtube video. I’m sure you have some left over bits of video you’ve been waiting to use against him. Now is the time!

  25. Posted July 11, 2008 at 11:34 am | Permalink

If it’s any consolation, here’s a video of P & S performing “Live” (short-I) live (long-I) for the first time ever in Toronto. (At least, they said it was the first time, and promised many new mistakes, but no! It was so good! :)) Video by, I suspect, someone at the table just behind ours (thanks to you, friend!). It’s too bad the lighting isn’t conducive to being able to see Paul’s facial features on video because that just makes it so much better…

I was originally going to vote for “Big Dick…”, but this tender performance swung my vote to P & S. Or, at least, it would have, if voting hadn’t been closed by the time I got home from the show. *dejected arrr* But thanks for this treat, guys! And great show! Come back with or without Coulton, we’ll be there!!

Got to see Live done live this past Saturday at Musikfest. Great song, but it definitely felt out of place in their set. It’ll probably work better in a show with Coulton.

I recently performed “Live” for a group of folks whom I knew to be fans of JoCo’s music. I introduced it as “a song which Jon has not yet recorded” (which is technically true, of course), and performed it with a MIDI sequence designed to sound like JoCo’s recorded arrangement of “Skullcrusher Mountain.”

They bought it! If I hadn’t told them about the songwriting contest, they would have believed that it was indeed a Jonathan Coulton Song.
